
Gary Griffiths was born and raised in South West Wales. In 2001 he was awarded a full scholarship to study acting at the Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts in London. Upon gaining a BA honours degree in Performance he then went on to study singing full-time at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama where he currently studies with Susan McCulloch.
He is a regular performer on both concert and opera stages. Recent engagements include solo debut’s at the Royal Albert Hall, the Wigmore Hall and the Barbican Hall, performances at the Ludlow English Song Weekend with pianist Simon Lepper, the Chipping Campden Music Festival with Joel Harder, Duruflé Requiem with the Orchestra of Johns and in May 2007 he made his BBC Radio 3 debut, performing on ‘In Tune’ with Iain Burnside.
Last summer he attended the Steans Institute for Young Artists at the Ravinia Festival in Chicago, USA and in October 2007 he travelled on tour to the US with the Pontarddulais Male Voice Choir as a soloist, performing in Manhattan, New York, Pennsylvania and Washington D.C.
His passion for the Lieder repertoire has seen him work with many distinguished figures including: Graham Johnson, Iain Burnside, Malcolm Martineau, Eugene Asti and Ken Noda. Operatically he has worked with British Youth Opera and appeared in the Rake’s Progress at the Aldeburgh festival with the Philharmonia Orchestra under conductor, Martyn Brabbins.
His extensive oratorio repertoire includes Mozart’s Requiem and C Minor Mass, Haydn’s The Seasons, The Nelson Mass and the Paukenmesse, Brahms Requiem, Fauré Requiem, Handel’s Messiah and Karl Orff’s Carmina Burana. Competitions include 2nd prize at the London Young Welsh Singer of the Year, and finalist at the Young Kathleen Ferrier Awards and the MOCSA Young Welsh Singer of the Year.
Future engagements include the role of Belcore in British Youth Opera's production of L'Elisir D'Amore in Tuscany with the South Bank Sinfonia and a Schubert lieder recital at London’s Kings Place Hall with pianist, Iain Burnside. Next year he will continue his studies at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama on the Masters vocal course.
